The old technique involved a lengthy 2-3 hour, arduous and invasive exposure of the jaw bone surgery and occasionally an implant could be placed. The new procedure is about an hour, a small surgical area approx 1.5 cm and the regular process for placement of a normal implant, everything is done in the small area where the implant will be placed. The procedure requires a titanium or ceramic root be fitted into your jaw to replace the lost tooth's root. Once the implant is anchored into the bone, the bone around the implant requires six weeks to four months of healing. Once the bone has healed, a support post and replacement tooth is anchored onto the implant.
Implants are a great option for a single tooth that breaks and is too far gone to spend a lot of money trying to play heroics to salvage and it only lasts a few short years. Normally when an implant is placed the patient has to wait for 3-6 months before an impression is taken to begin fabricating the crown or tooth to attach to the chewing surface of the titanium implant under the gums.
